First National Scientific Meeting on Health Social Science
Visayas-Mindanao Regional Conference
Theme: Health Social Science in the Philippines:
Practices, Policies and Prospects
Background and Rationale
The Masters in Health Social Science Program (MAHESOS) of
the Behavioral Sciences Department of De La Salle
University began in 1993 with funding support from the Ford
Foundation. It is the only program of its kind in the
Philippines and one of only three such programs in the
Asia-Pacific region. After 17 years since the MAHESOS
program began, the Behavioral Sciences Department is
organizing the First National Scientific Meeting on Health
Social Science to be held in September 2011, as part of the
Centennial Celebration of De La Salle University, Manila.
Together with partner institutions in the regions, the
Behavioral Sciences Department is organizing two regional
conferences (Visayas-Mindanao and Luzon). This is part of
the preparatory activities for the First National
Scientific Meeting on Health Social Science in September
2011 which aims to exchange information on research in
Health Social Science and to share experiences on the
social science interventions which have been used in
programs, projects and policies.
The target audience for both the national and regional
conferences includes health workers, educators, researchers
and students as well as government and non-government
organizations interested in health and health-related
issues.
